My Voice (And The Lack Of It)

Just a little background on me. I’ve been on the air for 30 years. I have used my voice to make a living for the entire time. When my voice doesn’t work, I don’t either. I never had allergies until about five years ago. That’s when all hell broke loose. When springtime rolls in, my allergies kick into high gear. Last Wednesday night, I went to bed and was fine. Thursday morning I woke up and BOOM! I was a different person. I had lost most of my voice. What complicates things more is that I now have severe allergies to most medications. Wonderful! What that leaves is for me to suffer and just ride out the storm.

Unfortunately or maybe fortunately, I’m not able to talk as much. Friday morning after doing my on-air shift on WCKM, my voice was toast. Not painful but gone. Saturday, I decided I was going to be quiet and baby myself. I am a bit of a wuss. I also have been the PA announcer for Adirondack hockey for some time. Saturday night the Phantoms hosted the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. I was okay for the first two periods of play but the 3rd period was brutal. By the time the game was over, my voice was shot, again. It made a special post-game get together a little different for everyone else. They must have thought they were dining with Brenda Vaccaro.

Easter Sunday was a great day. The family in Glens Falls got together and we also celebrated my granddaughter, ReeseAnn’s 1st birthday. Once again, just after singing Happy Birthday, it was gone again. I know that I am a little sensitive when it comes to taking care of my “Money Maker” but sometimes you just don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
